The Cavashawn Interview on After Hours with Kara

September 18, 2009

Cavashawn

Heavily influenced by The Beatles and other bands like Cheap Trick and Weezer, this four piece band, out of Chicago, has made a lot of accomplishments already! For a band that has only been around for a year, they have been getting quite a bit of attention in the Mid-Western area. Getting noticed by two major newspapers out of Chicago, The Chicago Tribune and The Chicago Sun Times, were both very impressed with their work ethic. On their current EP Cavashawn – White, they got to work with producer Jim Wirt, who also produced for bands Incubus, Hoobastank and Jack’s Mannequin!

Band of the Week – Shortwave

August 8, 2009

l_0144b74349429a13f3d20a308c239619

SHORTWAVES’s new-wave indie-rock is smart and sexy, anthems of heartbreak and triumph that tug at the heartstrings and speak to the masses. Their cool and fervent sound (a la Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Spoon) has impressed the expert ears of many accomplished producers. Grammy-winning producer Malcolm Burn (Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop) invited the band to record at his Catskills studio and, in a quick week of hard-work and happenstance, EP ‘SHORTWAVE’ was born. Pulsating dance-rock track “Esther” and contemplative ballad “Stereo” fit nicely between Kings of Leon and U2 on radio programmers’ playlists.

If you’ve seen SHORTWAVE, you’ll know their live show swagger serves them well, playing alongside Cracker and The Waking Eyes and hot gigs at the Mod Club, the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, Lee’s Palace, El Mocambo, and festival headlining spots including headlining NXNE showcases in Toronto. The band is also involved with War Child Canada and Watstock, an annual music fundraiser supporting the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Hard-working, impassioned rockers with heart.

SHORTWAVE trace their origins back to their childhood – brothers Ry (vocals/guitar) and Sager Johnson (guitar) grew up in Toronto with Devin Jannetta (drums), forming various bands and sharing stages with artists like Big Sugar, Junkhouse and SuperFriendz. It wasn’t till 2004 when they brought Cary Parker (organ) into the mix and took on the moniker SHORTWAVE did things begin to happen. Two years later, they found Nic Oliverio (bass) and the group was whole.

With features in NOW, Metro Toronto, and BlogTO and airplay on CBC Radio 2, 102.1 The Edge (Toronto), and college radio, SHORTWAVE have the right elements, the right songs, and the fans to propel their burgeoning career. Shortwave is heading into the studio this summer to record their debut full-length album, slated for release in 2009.

A Tribute to Three Pop Culture Icons

June 27, 2009
Recently, we have lost 3 icons from the entertainment world. All
three had such talent and gave us such joy throughout their careers.
Even though, in the latter years of each, we wondered about them and
their choices in life they are still a part of great entertainment
history. That is the way we want to remember Michael Jackson, Farrah
Fawcett and Ed McMahon.

Michael Jackson 1958 – 2009

(The amazing performance at the 25th anniversary celebration for Motown where the Moonwalk was done the first time)
From the early years of The Jackson Five to his tremendous solo
career, Michael Jackson showed us truly what an amazing talent he is.
That talent has influenced so many artists that have frequented the
charts today. Usher, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears are just a
few examples that Michael has left an impression with. Justin
Timberlake wrote on his website, “We have lost a genius and a true
ambassador of not only Pop music but of all music”. Jackson has won
numerous awards and recognitions, too many to be mentioned. This is
proof why he is considered the King of Pop.
Jackson was set to do a comeback tour starting in July in England.
He was training with Lou Ferrigno, star of the TV show The Incredible
Hulk, in preparation for the rigors of performing. Thursday afternoon,
Michael was rushed to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center after
suffering from a Cardiac Arrest. Michael Jackson passed away Thursday,
June 25th, 2009 at the age of 50. Cause of death is to be determined.

Farrah Fawcett 1947 – 2009

Jaclyn Smith (far right), friends and co-stars of 70’s hit TV show
Charlie’s Angels)
For those who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s, the name Farrah Fawcett
would bring back so many memories. Bringing back memories of either
you had her famous poster in your room, watching the hit TV show
Charlie’s Angels or admitting you had the famous Farrah hair. Another
thing that you can’t forget was the fantastic performance in the TV
Film The Burning Bed about domestic violence that earned her three Emmy
nominations. Not to mention her being married to “The Six Million
Dollar Man”, Lee Majors and then Later on movie star Ryan O’Neal of
Paper Moon.
In 2006, Fawcett was diagnosed with Anal Cancer and began
Chemotherapy treatment and surgery. On her 60th birthday she was
cancer free reported by Associated Press. Less than four months later
in May of 2007, doctors found more cancer in the same area that was
treated before. This month, Ryan O’Neal, her ex-husband had asked for
her hand in marriage. She accepted and O’Neal said the wedding would
happen “as soon as she can say yes”. Ryan and Farrah did not get the
chance to get married again. Farrah Fawcett died in the morning
Thursday, June 25th, 2009 in Intensive Care at Saint John’s Health
Center in Santa Monica, California.

Ed McMahon 1923 – 2009

(Ed McMahon (left) pictured with Johnny Carson (right), both of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson)
Heeeeeere’s Johnny! Anyone who was around in the early 60’s to the
early 90’s would know that opening. Ed McMahon, famous Second Banana
to Johnny Carson of The Tonight Show, made that opening memorable.
Besides, working alongside Carson for thirty years, Ed McMahon was also
well known as being the emcee on Star Search. Many talents of today
appeared on that show, such as, Christina Aguilera and Usher just to
name a couple.
Ed McMahon died at the age of 86 on June 23rd, 2009 after spending
weeks battling pneumonia, bone cancer and past injuries to his neck.
He also, before Michael Jackson, passed away at Ronald Reagan UCLA
Medical Center. Conan O’Brien, current Tonight show host paid tribute
to him later that night. Conan said. ”It is impossible, I think, for
anyone to imagine The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson without Ed
McMahon. Ed’s laugh was really the soundtrack to that show”. O’Brien
also added that, “McMahon with Carson created the most iconic two-shot
in broadcasting history. There will never be anything like that again.”
